Respelendent Quetzals

Resplendent Quetzals

Resplendent Quetzal

It was a very early start to look for a bird that I have always wanted to see, the resplendent quetzal. We headed along the road from Sevegre mountain lodge to a site where the quetzals have been known to nest. We had a bit of a wait but after a while the male flew in to the nesting hole ready for a change in nest sitting duties with the female. Views were distant but this didn't detract from the excitement of seeing such and amazing bird.

Later that morning we took a walk through the lodge grounds as was lucky enough to find more respendent quetzals with some better views that early morning. The males ave truly remarkable plumage and colours.

On our way back to the lodge we came across another pair chilling by their nest hole in a dead tree (bottom of photo below). We had a good 10 mins watching until we moved on back to the lodge. All in all a very successful morning in search of these magnificent birds and other inhabitants of the local area. See blog post here for other photos that day.
